If more than two ships are scheduled, passengers will be tendered ashore. The port area itself offers minimal services or amenities. It is situated approximately 3 miles south of the lively town of Playa del Carmen. Directly north of the port, less than a mile away, lies Xcaret, a well-known ecological theme park, Mayan archaeological site, and beach destination.
Getting Around from the Port
Since the Calica port facilities are limited, you will need transportation to explore the area:
- Taxi to Playa del Carmen: A taxi ride to Playa del Carmen, located about 3 miles north, typically costs around $10.
- Taxi to Xcaret Park: Xcaret is conveniently less than a mile north of the port; a very short taxi ride will take you to its entrance. Alternatively, many cruise lines offer organized transfers and tours to the park.
- Car Rental: Car rental services are available directly at the dock, offering a flexible option for those who wish to explore independently.
- To Aktun-Chen: This natural park is about a 25-minute drive from Playa del Carmen, meaning a total travel time of approximately 30-35 minutes from the Calica port.
- To Tulum: The ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum are further south. Expect a drive of about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Calica, making it a feasible day trip by taxi or rental car.
Attractions and Activities
With an 8-10 hour port call, you have several excellent options for independent exploration or organized tours:
- Xcaret Park: Located less than a mile north of the port, Xcaret is a premier ecological theme park. It blends natural beauty, Mayan culture, and adventure. Key attractions include floating down an underground river that winds through caves, exploring an archaeological site, and relaxing on a beach. Be sure to bring your bathing suit, mask, and snorkel. You can reach the park via a short taxi ride or a ship-organized transfer.
- Playa del Carmen: A quick 3-mile, $10 taxi ride north leads to Playa del Carmen, the heart of the Riviera Maya's shopping, dining, and nightlife scene. It's an ideal spot to stroll along its famous 5th Avenue, enjoy local cuisine, or visit a nearby beach.
- Aktun-Chen Natural Park (Indiana Joe's Tour): Situated about 25 minutes drive from Playa del Carmen (approximately 30-35 minutes from Calica port), Aktun-Chen offers an "Indiana Joe's Tour." This adventure begins with a walk through a spectacular 5-million-year-old cave featuring impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. The tour also includes flying over a kilometer (0.62 miles) on 10 zip lines and crossing two suspension bridges, providing scenic views of tropical plants and flowers.
- Tulum Ruins: For a significant historical experience, consider visiting the picturesque Mayan ruins of Tulum. The Calica cruise port itself has very few dining or shopping facilities. For a wide range of options, you'll need to head to nearby Playa del Carmen. This vibrant town is a prime destination for shopping, offering everything from local crafts to boutiques, and a diverse array of restaurants, cafes, and bars catering to various tastes and budgets.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN), indicated by the '$' symbol. Be mindful that this symbol is also used for US Dollars; look for "US$" or an 'S' with a double stroke to confirm USD pricing. US Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas such as Calica and Playa del Carmen. The approximate exchange rate is 17 Mexican Pesos to 1 US Dollar.
